In the Twin Flame and Soulmate Grief Support group, people who’ve lost their twin flame often bring up the feeling of an overwhelming desire to join their partner in death. It is described as a magnetic pull or lure towards their loved one on the other side. This article discusses what causes this feeling and how to deal with being faced with broken heart syndrome and “the window.”
The overwhelming desire to join a deceased twin flame, a metaphysical phenomenon akin to broken heart syndrome, typically peaks around 3-6 months after your loss. It incites an energetic pull towards your late partner. We often experience this deep longing for them, but with support and practices like energy healing, you can choose life and continue your twin flame mission. Also, resources like the National Mental Health Hotline offer assistance for those struggling.
When someone shares a deep connection with a person who has passed away, it’s not uncommon for the surviving person to be overcome with a magnetic pull towards them in spirit.
The act of someone’s soul energy leaving their physical body and crossing over into the spiritual realm creates an energetic window where it’s more likely for the surviving partner to die. When this window opens, the person feels a deep inner longing to be with their loved one.
The powerful feeling to follow them to the other side is a symptom of this window opening. The good news is that this window does not stay open for long—about three to six months after their partner’s death. But while it is open, the lure towards the other side is very real. The soul is given a choice to follow through, or to stay on earth and continue living.
The Window Opening After a Twin Flame Dies
When a twin flame dies, the surviving partner has the option to live and continue their time on earth, or to join their loved one on the other side.
The energy transmission of their late partner’s spirit crossing over into the spiritual realm opens a metaphysical window. In the time span that the window is open, the surviving partner becomes more sensitive to their psychic abilities, subtle bodies, and energy. The effects are manifested as a deep desire to follow their partner over to the other side. This is the biggest symptom of the window being open.
While it sounds macabre, it is simply the metaphysical effects of the transmission of soul energy being manifested emotionally, mentally, and physically in the surviving partner.
After my twin flame died, I felt this window open. The option was there for me to make the choice to join my twin flame, Greg, on the other side. But I didn’t want to leave my young daughter. It took extra intention and a conscious effort to ensure I was signaling to the universe that I wanted to remain here on earth and finish out my incarnation. The opportunity for me to join Greg in Spirit was there for about a month or two after his passing.
Why does this happen and what does it feel like?
This window opens after their passing from the energy transfer of their life force into spirit. Because you are so deeply connected to them at higher levels beyond the physical level, you feel the tug of this transition. It might feel like a sense of anxiety or nervousness that you’re more likely to get into an accident or something happen to you to die. Or it could feel like a sense of longing, like you’re incomplete and want to be with them on the other side.
When the Heart Physically Reacts to Loss: The Widowhood Effect & Broken Heart Syndrome
“Dying of a broken heart” is a clinical reality. According to Harvard Health, takotsubo cardiomyopathy—often called Broken Heart Syndrome—is a temporary change in the heart muscle triggered by intense emotional stress. This stress inhibits the heart’s ability to pump blood effectively, mimicking a heart attack.
The statistics surrounding this connection are sobering:
- The Critical Window: Surviving spouses have a 66% higher risk of dying in the first three months following their partner’s death (The Daily Mail).
- Gender Disparities: The death of a wife correlates with an 18% increase in mortality for men, while the death of a husband leads to a 16% increase for women (University Hospitals).
- Specific Vulnerability: Men are 70% more likely to die within a year of losing a spouse (Time.com).
- Immediate Impact: A 2016 study found that women aged 55–64 died at a faster rate from heart disease within the first week of widowhood compared to married peers.
Twin Flames are the Exception to the Rule
While the “Widowhood Effect” often claims those who have completed a long, traditional life journey together, the Twin Flame dynamic introduces a different energetic blueprint.
Here’s why:
1. Completed Cycles vs. Ongoing Missions
In many cases of the Widowhood Effect, the couple has spent decades together—healing traumas, raising families, and closing karmic cycles. When one passes, the other’s earthly work is often complete, and their soul naturally follows.
However, Twin Flames often face separation or the death of a partner at younger ages. This isn’t a sign of a failed connection; rather, it indicates that the mission has shifted from the physical to the etheric.
2. The Multi-Dimensional Connection
Unlike a traditional marriage based on physical presence, the Twin Flame bond is sustained at the soul level.
- Beyond the Five Senses: Twin Flames utilize “Subtle Bodies” to communicate. When one crosses over, the “energy channel” remains open.
- The Higher Mission: Twin Flames are here to expand human consciousness. Often, one partner moves to the “other side” to act as a guide, while the surviving partner stays to anchor that high-frequency energy on Earth.
3. The Will to Live Through Soul Knowledge
The reason Twin Flames are uniquely equipped to survive “Broken Heart Syndrome” is their understanding of Soul Monads and Incarnations. Knowing that your counterpart isn’t “gone” but has simply returned to their Higher Self provides a level of resilience that a purely physical perspective cannot offer. You aren’t just a widow or widower; you are a grounded anchor for your twin’s celestial energy. Your will to live is fueled by the knowledge that you are still working together to usher in a higher vibration of love for the planet.
Comparing Broken Heart Syndrome to The Window of a Twin Flame’s Passing
Take a look at this statistic: People who are older in age have an increased risk of dying after their partner passes away (Verywell Mind).
This brings an important thing to note — a distinction in the nature of the twin flame connection and why twin flame partners pass away at younger ages, leaving the surviving partner to continue their journey here alive, working together through the ether to finish what they started together.
You may feel like you miss your twin flame. You may feel the magnetic pull luring you to them on the other side. But when we think about how an older widow, a person who has spent 60 years of their life with their partner who has now passed away, we need to keep our wits about us and understand: they have lived full lives.
Over those decades and decades of time together, they’ve formed bonds, broken karmic cycles, healed traumas, and achieved their purpose together. So that it’s more likely that, when one passes away, the other’s work here on earth is done and their soul calls them home (they pass away to join their late spouse on the other side).
In a twin flame relationship, there is an added dimension to the equation. That is, the higher mission that the twin flame couple is here to uphold through their time together. This makes things between twin flames more complicated than the story of the high school sweethearts who married at 18, had three kids, worked an honest living while the other parent was the homemaker and raised their family, achieving the typical goals or purposes we think of in the American dream.
For twin flames, after one of them dies, there is still more work to do; there’s more that the surviving partner must accomplish, even in their partner’s physical absence.
This is because twin flames are expanding the bounds of how we know and love one another. We are on a spiritual journey, meaning our purpose extends far beyond the immediate reasons and things of this lifetime. We’re using our knowledge and experiences across lifetimes to shape our consciousness (with the ultimate goal of raising the vibration or increasing the frequency or quality of energy and usher in an age of communication, love, and intelligence).
When one twin flame dies, the other does not need their physical presence to feel them. There’s a greater understanding that this bond is sustained at the soul level, and isn’t dependent on one body or incarnation. Twin flames use senses beyond the basic 5 (sight, smell, touch, etc.) to detect information and navigate their journey, so we are capable of using levels and layers like our Subtle Bodies to experience this.
The Surviving Twin Flame is Here to Live
How to Protect Yourself from The Broken Heart Window
Twin flames are here for a purpose. We are here to raise the frequency of the world and bring higher love to those around us, through the personal development and transformation brought on by our twin flame journey.
That said, it is important that twin flames take steps to shield from the energetic pull they may feel while in a state of pain and grief over their loss.
Because this window is energetic in nature, there are energetic (metaphysical) precautions you can take to protect yourself, such as:
- Energy healing
- Chakra balancing
- Shadowwork
- Grounding
- Crystal healing
- Reiki
- Spirit communication (working with your guides)
- Physical nutrition (e.g., eating an alkaline diet to ensure proper gut health; the source of your intuition and brain-heart-gut health)
- Clearing the mirror
- Meditation
These practices will help shield you from the negative effects when this window opens. It will keep you grounded and more in your body. Your soul will be more aligned with your physical being, rather than with your spiritual self in Spirit. In other words, you will be more inclined to stay here on earth and less prone to an accident or fatal heart condition.
What to do if you feel the pull towards your late Twin Flame
Even with this spiritual knowledge, Twin Flames are still human. The physical heart feels the “magnetic pull” of the counterpart crossing over. It requires conscious effort to acknowledge the pain while choosing to stay for the mission.
When my twin flame died, I often felt this, too. However, I also felt a deep sense of purpose that I was meant to stay here on earth and continue to live. How did I deal with it?
Any time that feeling would start to tug at me, I used this affirmation to keep myself grounded and fully in my body – not leaving anything open, energetically, for my spirit to call me home.
An Affirmation for the Surviving Twin Flame
“I acknowledge the profound bond I share with my Twin Flame, a connection that transcends time, space, and the physical body. Though my heart feels the weight of their transition, I recognize that my physical life is a vital anchor for our shared mission.
My heart is strong, resilient, and steady. It beats with the purpose of two souls, fueled by a love that cannot be extinguished. I choose to remain grounded in this vibration, honoring our journey by fulfilling the work I am meant to do here on Earth.
I am never truly alone. As I breathe, we breathe together. As I serve, we serve together. I am the bridge between Heaven and Earth, and I choose to live, to love, and to shine.”
This affirmation worked for me. Give it a try and see how it helps for yourself.
